Stumble:Encounter by chance.
Tengo una pequeña utilería llamada StumbleUpon en mi FireFox. Es una chulada para los que usamos este navegador. De repente encuentras joyitas o cosas interesantes.
Una de ellas es esta, donde mencionan que se encontró, de alguna manera, tejido “muscular” de Tiranosaurio.
Está bastante interesante, para que le echen un ojo. Por lo demás, si no lo usan, bájense FireFox, una excelente alternativa a Internet Exploder. No, no es un error de ortografía.
También bájense los plug-ins que les hagan la navegación más placentera. En otra oportunidad mencionaré los que yo uso.

¿Que por qué?
¿Y todavía se lo preguntan? Pues qué bueno que preguntaron, y los que no lo hicieron, de todos modos valdría la pena que siguieran leyendo.
Primero que nada, algunas definiciones, cortesía de Wikipedia:
Spyware: Los programas espía o spyware son aplicaciones que recopilan información sobre una persona u organización sin su conocimiento.
Adware: El adware es software que durante su funcionamiento despliega publicidad de distintos productos o servicios.
Malware: La palabra malware proviene de una agrupación de las palabras malicious software. Este programa o archivo, que es dañino para el ordenador, está diseñado para insertar virus, gusanos, troyanos o spyware intentando conseguir algún objetivo, como podría ser el de recoger información sobre el usuario o sobre el ordenador en sí.
Resulta que el día de ayer por la tarde fui con un amigo para arreglarle su computadora. Es realmente increíble como los ISPs (un ISP es un proveedor de acceso a internet, o “internet service provider”, como Prodigy) no capacitan ni dan ayuda o tips a usuarios “normales” tanto en el uso de la internet como en cuanto a los peligros que pueden aparecer.
Tenía días que me había comentado que su computadora no trabajaba, que no se podía conectar a internet y otras cosas, como la aparición “espontánea” de ventanas con contenido inapropiado (mi amigo tiene 3 hijos, ninguno de los cuales está en edad de ver esa clase de cosas). El caso es que por fin a ver.
“Media hora, una hora a lo más”, me dije. Oh, gran error. Estuve aproximadamente tres horas y media luchando contra las fuerzas maléficas del adware, del spyware y de los virus. Apenas alcanzaba a eliminar alguno cuando otros dos volteaban a verme con sus feas cabezas, riéndose de mis esfuerzos. De repente me sentí como Sísifo, empujando la roca hacia la cima, para ver cómo volvía a caerse.
Después de una investigación al más puro estilo de Sherlock Holmes, pero en esta ocasión sin el Dr. Watson, descubrí que la gente que programa este tipo de software malicioso realmente se exprime el cerebro para ocultar sus bichos y ofuscar a los que nos dedicamos a darles batalla.
Encontré una gran cantidad de referencias a estos programas en los archivos vitales de Windows, de modo tal que si se borra alguno, “automágicamente” se arranca un proceso que vuelve a instalar el mismo software una y otra vez. Eso nos pica el orgullo de un modo que para qué les cuento.
Baste decir que entre el registro de Windows, los directorios “especiales” y cosas instaladas sin el consentimiento del usuario, tardé mucho más de lo que hubiera deseado (eso sí, quitándome la sed con una sabrosa agua de melón), pero al final todo ese “malware” cedió. Ahora la cuestión es, ¿cuánto tiempo logrará estar esa computadora “sana”? ¿Una semana? ¿15 días? ¿Un mes?
Espero que sea más, porque la dejé mejor protegida que el penal de La Palma. Usé un par de programas llamados Ad-Aware y Spybot Search & Destroy (para detección de “malware”), así como ZoneAlarm (para detección de intrusiones y accesos no autorizados desde y hacia internet). También reinstalé una copia del Norton Antivirus perfectamente actualizada, para tratar de evitar nuevamente ataques de virus.
Curiosamente, en casa solamente uso uno, el PC-Cillin, gratuito por parte de Telmex (al menos el primer año de uso), en conjunto con el filtro de Navegación Segura (Enologic). Puedo recomendar ampliamente ambos. El primero conjunta un firewall, un “web trap” para sitios maliciosos (ActiveX y Java applets malintencionados) y un antivirus. El segundo me permite filtrar contenido, permitir o no acceso a “chats” (Messenger, ICQ, etc.) y establecer horarios de navegación, de acuerdo a lo que yo le aplique. Éste último lo instalé porque ahora mis hijos entran a internet como si fuera prender la televisión, y en realidad me preocupa lo que o a quien puedan encontrar en la red, como sitios de racismo, odio, pornográficos y demás, o gente en los chats que puedan querer aprovecharse de ellos.
¿Cuál es mi ventaja al respecto, y que les da ventaja también a ellos? Que mi carrera me ha permitido ver el desarrollo de la red en general, de sus virtudes y defectos, de sus amplias avenidas y sus oscuros callejones, y me es muy fácil decirles por qué o por qué no deben navegar en ciertos lugares, y lo entienden perfectamente.
¿Cuál es la desventaja de la mayoría de usuarios de internet (y a este respecto, de sus hijos)? Que están en una comunidad que no conocen y que piensan que sí. Después vienen las quejas de que internet es malísimo, de que lo único que hay es pornografía, etc. Uno regularmente encuentra lo que busca, así que en realidad no debería haber sorpresas.
¿Mis recomendaciones, como “experto” en la materia? Hay que descargar y mantener actualizados los programas mencionados, así como hacer chequeos semanales buscando spyware, adware y virus, así como mantener monitoreado el uso por parte de los pequeños, para evitar sorpresas desagradables.
Aprovechando el viaje, también me gustaría hacer referencia a otras herramientas que ya no pueden faltar en ninguna casa que cuente con acceso a internet y una PC con Windows. Estas herramientas son Firefox y Thunderbird, las cuales reemplazan práctica e íntegramente a Internet Explorer y a Outlook Express. También, en lugar de usar Office (para los más “radicales”) usar OpenOffice.
¿Por qué las recomiendo? Hay varias razones:
Son de código abierto y libre.
No se requiere pago de licencias de ningún tipo.
Se actualizan constantemente (como ejemplo, Firefox está en la versión 1.0.4, con 3 versiones en el último mes).
No parecen queso suizo (o lo que es lo mismo, es más difícil que entren bichos a la máquina).
No son de Microsoft, ni de ninguna otra compañía.
Existen programas “conectores” (plug-ins) que permiten mucha más personalización.
No le piden nada a los programas comerciales, más bien al contrario (Internet Explorer 7 al fin traerá navegación en pestañas).
Son multiplataforma (Macintosh, Linux, Windows)
¿Quieren más?
Sí, definitivamente soy un converso a estos programas. Si tan solo hubiera mejores juegos en Linux, cambiaría todo mi entorno.
